Not Behind. Just Different: Rewriting the Narrative for Neurodiverse Readers

I used to panic about milestones.
Every time Caleel struggled to recognize a letter or lost focus during reading time, a voice inside me whispered, He’s falling behind. Behind whom? Behind what? I didn’t know, only that I had internalized the idea that learning should be linear, fast, and measurable. Especially reading.
But here’s what I’ve learned: neurodiverse children are not behind. They are wired differently. They learn in loops, in leaps, in deep dives, in questions, in colors, in sound. They absorb the world in a way that doesn’t always fit inside phonics worksheets or reading level charts. And that doesn’t make them broken. It makes them brilliantly unique.
The problem isn’t with our children. The problem is with the narrow definition of success we’ve been taught to chase. The problem is a system that celebrates speed over comprehension, compliance over curiosity
.A system that doesn’t make room for sensory needs, processing differences, or cultural expression in how we teach literacy.
That’s why I created Phonics Flow.
It’s not just a curriculum, it’s a reimagining. A joyful, affirming, multisensory approach to reading that centers neurodiverse learners and honors their identities. It’s for the kids who need movement while they sound out words.
For the kids who light up when the character looks like them.
For the kids who process slower, deeper, or differently, and still deserve to feel smart and seen.
Because reading isn’t just about decoding words. It’s about discovering voice, building confidence, and connecting with the world.
And when we shift our mindset from “behind” to “different,”we stop trying to fix our children. We start adapting the system to fit them.
To every parent, teacher, and advocate reading this:Your child isn’t behind. They are on their own sacred path.Let’s walk with them, not ahead of them.
